Project objective
Lallen is a project which I did for my Bachelor Final Project that is commissioned by a client known as the Maker Store based in Amsterdam. The assignment was to design a product or future business plan and develop it into a design that was as realistic as possible that could be implemented in the current form of the company for both the long and short term implementation. The purpose the project was to attract more people to the Maker Store and especially to make the Maker Store distinctive from other concept stores in Amsterdam.
Problem statement
The research showed that the locals were no longer emphasized as a potential target group in terms of the product range they offered. Many people in Amsterdam saw no reason to buy something specific at the Maker Store, because that exact same product was also offered in dozens of other stores in Amsterdam. Especially tourists and day visitors were drawn to the store.
Deliverable
The deliverable was a fully developed product including a packaging design and branding.
Based on (field) research and interviews with locals it turned out that the design should be like a product that has a local aspect, a narrative and environmentally-friendly characteristic. In this way, the local ‘Amsterdammer’ also feels himself connected to the narrative behind the products at the Maker Store.
The three core values of the Maker Store that are incorporated into all products are: locally designed or produced, a story behind each product, and environmentally friendly product. Based on these core values, I started my design process before researching the positioning of the Maker Store and researching the target group as a store in Amsterdam.
Design
The designs are based on existing typical bar stories told by Dutch writer Piet Oomes in his book titled "Drenkelingen", in which this former bar owner experienced all these. All illustratotions are made by Amsterdam-based artists and can be found below each illustration.
All short stories are printed on the inside of each t-shirt and its corresponding illustration is placed on the back of each t-shirt. The T-shirs are retrieved from a local army dump store to ensure specific quality standards and to enable sustainability as much as possible.
The paper packaging is made out of recycled beer mats and has multi purposes as it can be used as wrapping paper, a poster and as packaging materials for other products in the Makerstore.
